鈥淗ere,鈥?I said, offering the last of my water. I had no idea why he hadn鈥檛 just gone back to the aidstation and refilled if he was so worried, but I was too exhausted to ask any more questions. Remember? Back when you were a kid and you had to be yelled at to slow down? Every game youplayed, you played at top speed, sprinting like crazy as you kicked cans, freed all, and attackedjungle outposts in your neighbors鈥?backyards. Half the fun of doing anything was doing it at recordpace, making it probably the last time in your life you鈥檇 ever be hassled for going too fast. 鈥淣o one beats the Tarahumara,鈥?the shopkeeper insisted. The vigour necessary to prosecute two professions at the same time is not given to every one, and it was only lately that I had found the vigour necessary for one. There must be early hours, and I had not as yet learned to love early hours. I was still, indeed, a young man; but hardly young enough to trust myself to find the power to alter the habits of my life. And I had heard of the difficulties of publishing 鈥?a subject of which I shall have to say much should I ever bring this memoir to a close. I had dealt already with publishers on my mother鈥檚 behalf, and knew that many a tyro who could fill a manuscript lacked the power to put his matter before the public 鈥?and I knew, too, that when the matter was printed, how little had then been done towards the winning of the battle! The lad who is sent to mechanical work has longer hours, during which he is kept from danger, and has not generally been taught in his boyhood to anticipate pleasure. He looks for hard work and grinding circumstances. I certainly had enjoyed but little pleasure, but I had been among those who did enjoy it and were taught to expect it. And I had filled my mind with the ideas of such joys. For millions of years, we lived in a world without cops, cabs, or Domino鈥檚 Pizza; we relied on ourlegs for safety, food, and transportation, and it wasn鈥檛 as if you could count on one job endingbefore the next one began. Look at !Nate鈥檚 wild hunt with Louis; !Nate sure wasn鈥檛 planning on afast 10k immediately after a half-day hike and a high-speed hunt, but he still found the reserveenergy to save Louis鈥檚 life. Nor could his ancestors ever be sure that they wouldn鈥檛 become foodright after catching some; the antelope they鈥檇 chased since dawn could attract fiercer animals, forcing the hunters to drop lunch and run for their lives. The only way to survive was to leavesomething in the tank鈥攁nd that鈥檚 where the brain comes in.
